I Saw the War
I Saw the War
These children’s testimonies are the result of field research aimed at documenting Russian war crimes. The research was carried out by Donbas Frontliner photojournalist Andriy Dubchak, who has been working in frontline Ukrainian cities since the full-scale invasion began, and psychologist Avtandil-Sandro Kokhodze, who analyzes the impact of trauma on children’s mental health. The documentary series “I Saw the War” consists of three episodes, each dedicated to a different chapter of the war’s tragedy as lived by children. The first episode focuses on child refugees from Mariupol and Kramatorsk who witnessed brutal combat, lost loved ones, and endured both physical and emotional trauma. The second episode tells the stories of children from the Kyiv region who lived through occupation and were forced to grow up quickly, making difficult decisions and caring for younger family members. The third episode highlights children from Eastern Ukraine who spent long periods under constant shelling, surviving for months in cities and villages at the epicenter of the fighting, suffering severe physical and psychological wounds.
